action

The two boys Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn live in St. Petersburg, a fictional small town on the Mississippi in the USA in the 19th century. Huck Finn, who has no home, was abandoned by his father and has lived in a bin on the outskirts of town ever since. Tom, a well-known ruffian and bully, lives under the strict rule of his aunt Polly and his lively and ambitious brother Sid, who blackens him more than once with his aunt. Hardly a day goes by when Huck and Tom don't come up with some kind of prank. Mostly the imaginative Tom, who devours books about adventurers, pirates and brave heroes, comes up with the most unbelievable ideas that Huck gets carried away with again and again.

Once they decide to go to the small island off St. Petersburg with Joe Harper and start their career as wild pirates from there. Another time they found a noble band of robbers who aim to steal from the rich.

They rarely lack ingenuity. Tom needs this again and again, for example after a fight with another boy from Aunt Polly, he is ordered to paint the fence in front of the house. He solves such a problem by convincing all the boys in town that it is an honor to be able to paint such a beautiful fence and then they actually do it.

Another highlight in the life of Tom, actually Thomas Sawyer, is the arrival of Judge Thatcher's niece Becky in St. Petersburg, with whom Tom falls in love. Becky even agrees to be engaged to Tom and Tom is over the moon. But the engagement ceremony ends in disaster for Tom when he carelessly talks about his engagement to Amy Lawrence.

For the two adventurous boys, things get precarious a short time later, because they are in great danger when they witness the murder of the city doctor in the cemetery one night. Though innocent, Muff Potter, a simple, naive St. Petersburg resident, is brought to justice. At the subsequent court hearing, however, the two friends overcome their fear and ensure that Potter is acquitted. But now they have to fear the revenge of the real perpetrator, Indian Joe.

The two also act as treasure hunters and even find something. They can secure several thousand dollars in a box. The brutal and destitute father of Huck, Pap Finn, learns about this, and that from now on the widow Douglas will take care of Huck Finn. He kidnaps his son and demands his money. But Huck Finn escapes, lays evidence that suggests a murder by his father and flees to the island, where he soon meets Jim, the colored slave of the widow Douglas and Miss Watsons.

They both go on a journey north on a raft along the Mississippi. They want to reach Canada, where there is no slavery . On this journey they have to endure numerous adventures until they come across two cheaters who hand Jim over. Desperate, Huck Finn searches for his friend and ends up on the farm of Silas and Sally Phelps. None other than an uncle and an aunt of Tom Sawyer, who will also arrive there soon, and who are holding Jim prisoner. Together they start a rescue campaign for Jim, which is actually no longer necessary: Miss Watson, who has since passed away, had given Jim freedom in her will.
