occupation

The Commitments (original title: The Commitments ) is an Irish - British feature film based on a novel by Roddy Doyle about a group of young people in Dublin who are starting a soul band.

action

The young unemployed Jimmy Rabbitte has a vision: He wants to bring soul to Ireland and found "the toughest workers band in the world". Jimmy himself can neither sing nor play an instrument, so he first has to find the band members. Little by little he found, partly by chance, partly through acquaintances and through an advertisement in the newspaper, the composition of the band that seemed suitable to him.

The first rehearsals are still rather bad, but the combination of musicians and singers around the apparently talented singer and frontman Deco under the management of Rabbitte and with the musical experience of the older band member Joey “The Lips” Fagan is quite motivated. Little by little the band developed and there were first public appearances.

The band is becoming more and more of a local attraction. Even Jimmy's father, who actually adores Elvis Presley - a picture of Elvis hangs in Jimmy's living room over one of the Pope's - is starting to like soul.

At the height of their success, when the band played a gig at "Gallagher's", Jimmy was offered a record deal . The rest of the band doesn't notice this anymore, however, as the members are hopelessly falling out. The drop that brings the barrel to overflow is the announced appearance by Wilson Pickett , which does not appear. Jimmy is then disappointed and goes home on foot. He argues with Joey the trumpeter because he thinks he lied to him about Pickett.

On the way home he runs into a limousine . The driver asks Jimmy for directions to "Gallagher's". Jimmy replies that the pub is already closed. As it turns out, the passenger in the car was none other than Wilson Pickett.

The film was nominated for an Oscar in 1992 for best editing. He won several BAFTA awards . The British Film Institute voted The Commitments 38th Best British Films of All Time in 1999 .

The Wiesbaden film evaluation agency awarded the production the rating of particularly valuable .
