Getting married is a serious matter, says the groom Epaminond Aplombow and adds that the bride's parents have by no means fulfilled all their promises. Although the groom pocketed a thousand rubles dowry and the bride Daschenka brought household items into the marriage, the two promised lottery tickets are missing. Good - sponge over it. But Aplombow, who works as a valuer in the credit fund, does not want to do without the general - as it were the focal point at the wedding table .

All right, Nastassja Timofejewna, the bride's mother, is already marrying the third daughter to a righteous man. So she sends the insurance agent Andrei Nyunin, provided with twenty-five rubles, on the trail. The search for a highly decorated military as a guest of honor continues. The wedding guests must be kept from dining until - as promised - frigate captain a. D. Fyodor Rewunow-Karaulow arrives. Njunin, who maneuvers the guest to the table, assures that a frigate captain in the navy is equivalent to a major general in the ground forces . Rewunow-Karaulow takes the insurance agent aside and objects. He was not a general, just an officer, ranked below the colonel . Njunin doesn't want to hear that.

You can finally dine. The guest of honor finds the bitter herring and the bitter bread inedible. The already enticed guests call out to the bride and groom: “Bitter! Bitter! Kiss each other! ”Aplombow and Daschenka kiss for the umpteenth time during the celebration. The 72-year-old guest of honor, in the year 1865, he has left the service, the celebration turns out over as outspoken boring, only the long and wide from starboard , Oberbramsegel , jib sheet , yards , rope , cross bream , Kluver et cetera can ramble. The mother of the bride Nastassja Timofejewna has got through life without education and is on the ears of the insurance agent Nyunin; loudly mourns her badly invested twenty-five rubles. It turns out Njunin pocketed the money. The fake general leaves the party indignant about such inferior characters.
