The Cow is a 1989 Soviet oil-on-glass animation short film directed by Alexander Petrov .
action
The boy fetches the father from the railroad tracks not far from the house and takes him to the family stable: the only cow owned by the family has given birth to a young. Over time, the little animal becomes a young bull and the father sells him. The cow cannot get over the loss of the child. She becomes stubborn, no longer pulls the plow and when the boy hugs her comfortingly, she pulls herself free from the rope and breaks away. The family searches in vain for the animal.
The boy falls asleep in the barn in the evening and dreams of the cow that carries him amicably on its horns and is later run over by the plow. In fact, a train stopped on the tracks not far from the house: the cow was run over by the train. The boy reports that the family ate the meat of the cow, so that she gave everything to the family - her young, meat, offal, leather. He never forgot the cow.
production
The cow is based on a story by Andrei Platonow . It was Alexander Petrov's film debut. Like many later animated films by Petrov, the cow was animated with lavish oil painting on glass.
