The Night in the Cemetery ( Russian Ночь на кладбище , Notsch na kladbishche) is a humorous short story by the Russian writer Anton Chekhov , which was published on January 8, 1886 in issue 1 of the Moscow satirical magazine Die Grille (Russian Сверчок, Swertschok) .

In 1894 the story was translated into Slovak ( V noci na cintoríne ).

As in any better Russian story, drunkenness plays a major role. Moscow on the threshold of the new year: In the pouring rain, Ivan gropes his way home on New Year's night at two o'clock. He covered the considerable distance from Mestschanskaya Street to Presnja Street, which is considerable for a drunk, without any particular incident. Dull, glowing lanterns are soon replaced by almost impenetrable darkness. Ivan gets lost and asks in horror: What next? The answer: Always follow your nose. After several violent collisions with lampposts, Iwan takes a seat on a seat, quite exhausted. If only it wasn't for the headache! A ray of hope: the matches stayed dry. In the light of the first flame, Ivan notices a wooden grave cross. And he's sitting on a tombstone. Ivan missed Presnya Street and got lost in the Vagankovo ​​area. Although Ivan is not afraid of cemeteries or the dead and he also endures the howling of two grave dwellers, when a heavy bony hand rests on his shoulder, the resting man finally loses consciousness.

On New Year's morning, Ivan is released from the barred cell of the police station. Two gendarmes picked him up in the Beloryssov tombstone shop and then arrested him as a precaution.

Before that - in the years 1882 to 1885 - the freelance writer Anton Chekhov had already published a number of humorous short stories in the joke paper Oskolki .
