Barthelmess was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor at the first Academy Awards in 1929 for his portrayal in these two films , but was defeated by Emil Jannings , who won the award for his portrayals in the films His Last Command and The Way of All Flesh (The Way of All Flesh) received.
