Die Sportskanonen is an American comedy from 1998 about the fictional sport BASEketball, a mixture of basketball and baseball . The screenwriter and director is David Zucker .

Social failure friends Joe Cooper, known as Coop, and Doug Remer dream of better times. While everyone around her is making a career, the two share a run-down house and wonder how they can get beautiful women. During a party they weren't actually invited to, they invent a game to impress two girls. Since it's a mix of basketball and baseball , they call it baseketball and run small private tournaments on the driveway of their house. The game grew in popularity until the millionaire and entrepreneur Ted Denslow became aware of "sport" and Coop and Doug's associated values and founded a league for the game.
The two thus get their own team ("Beers") and start a successful season. After Denslow suffocates on a hot dog during a game , Coop inherits the Beers on condition that they lead them to victory of the season - should he not succeed, his young widow Yvette will inherit the team. At the proclamation of her will, she meets Baxter Cain, with whom she forges plans to deprive Coop and Doug of the title and to transform the sport into a cash cow .
During the tour across the United States, Coop met the young Jenna Reed, who is a carer for seriously ill children. Cancer-stricken Joey in particular is a big fan of Coop and the sport, so there are several encounters in which both Coop and Doug fall in love with her, resulting in a competition between them.
Baxter Cain takes advantage of the situation and seduces Doug with the approaches of the life of a superstar - condition for their fulfillment, however, are changes in the game rules, which Coop and Doug had drafted and defined as immutable and sacred. The differences between the two come to a head and culminate in the final when they exchange blows just before the game. In the end, they remember their friendship and win the championship.
