Diederik Maarten Samsom (born July 10, 1971 in Groningen ) is a Dutch politician of the Partij van de Arbeid .

Life

Samsom grew up in Leeuwarden . He studied technical physics (specializing in nuclear physics ) at the Technical University of Delft from 1989 to 1997 . He got involved with Greenpeace and was the first PvdA candidate for the Second Chamber in 2002. In the same year he became managing director of the green electricity dealer Echte Energie , which was taken over by Eneco in 2008 .

Samsom is married and has a daughter and a son. He lives in Leiden .

politics

In the 2002 elections, Samsom was unable to win a mandate. Since the parliamentary elections in 2003 he has been a member of the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) in the Second Chamber . Samsom, which belongs to the left wing of the party, was defeated in 2008 in a voting against the parliamentary group leader Mariëtte Hamer . He assumed this position on February 22, 2012 after Job Cohen resigned as political leader. On March 16, 2012, he was elected group chairman and political leader by party members.

In the Dutch parliamentary elections in 2012 , Samsom was the top candidate ( lijsttrekker ) for the PvdA. With 24.8% of the vote and 38 seats (+5.2 percentage points or +8 seats compared to the 2010 election ), the party became the second strongest force behind the previous ruling party VVD with 26.6% and 41 seats. At the end of October 2012, the VVD and the PvdA agreed on the formation of a grand coalition , in which Samsom will not assume any government office. Instead, he wants to continue to hold the office of parliamentary group leader of the PvdA.
