Dierk Walter

Dierk Walter (born April 16, 1970 in Singen (Hohentwiel) ) is a German historian .

Life

Walter studied history and political science at the University of Augsburg (MA) from 1991 to 1995 . Then he was a research assistant for the latest general history at the Historical Institute of the University of Bern . In 2001 he was with Stig Förster with the dissertation Prussian Army Reforms 1807-1870. Military innovation and the myth of the "Roonian reform" for Dr. phil. ( summa cum laude ) doctorate. This was followed by a position as a research assistant in the “Theory and History of Violence” department at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research . In 2008 he completed his habilitation and received the Venia Docendi for Modern and Contemporary History at the Philosophical-Historical Faculty of the University of Bern. From 2012 to 2013 he represented the professorship for modern and contemporary history at the Historical Institute of the University of Cologne . From 2013 to 2015 he was a research associate in the research project "Crisis and Transformation of Empires" at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research.

Walter is a member of the Military History Working Group , the Association of Historians in Germany , the Historical Peace Research Working Group and the Military and Society in the Early Modern Age . He is also the author and editor of several books on military history.
