Dieter Geuenich

Dieter Geuenich (born February 17, 1943 in Honnef ) is a German historian who has emerged primarily in the areas of medieval personal name research , Alemannic research and the history of the Lower Rhine .

Live and act

Dieter Geuenich studied history, German, theology and philosophy in Bonn and Münster . From 1969 to 1972 he was a research assistant in the special research area “Medieval Research” at the University of Münster. In 1972 he received his doctorate from Karl Schmid in Münster . From 1973 to 1982 he was a research assistant at the history seminar at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg . In 1981 he qualified as a professor in Freiburg im Breisgau for "Middle and Modern History and Historical Regional Studies". From 1982 to 1987 Geuenich was professor of medieval history in Freiburg before, after an intermezzo as a guest lecturer in 1987/88 at the German Historical Institute in Rome, he accepted a professorship for medieval history at the University of Duisburg in 1989 . In 1992/93 he was visiting professor in Tokyo and in 1994 visiting professor in Los Angeles. In 2000 he became a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . From 2004 to 2008 Geuenich taught as a professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen. As an academic teacher, he supervised twelve dissertations.

Geuenich published in 1997 an overview presentation to Alemanni , which appeared in the second edition of 2005. In Duisburg, Geuenich initiated and promoted various projects such as the interdisciplinary DFG project "Nomen et gens", the Institute for Lower Rhine Cultural History and Regional Development (InKuR), as its Managing Director until 2007, or the Niederrhein Academy / Academie Nederrijn eV in Xanten , which he is chairman of. Geuenich is series editor of the Xanten lectures on the history of the Lower Rhine . In addition, Geuenich is a member of the steering committee of the Euregio Study Program (ESPRO) and co-editor of the Reallexikons der Germanischen Altertumskunde . For his services, Dieter Geuenich was awarded the Mercator Badge of Honor of the City of Duisburg in 2005 by the Lord Mayor of Duisburg, Adolf Sauerland, and in 2015, the Badge of Honor of the State of Baden-Württemberg .

In the municipal elections in Baden-Württemberg in 2019 , Dieter Geuenich was elected to the municipal council of Denzlingen for the free voters .
