The Dietmar Hopp Stadium is a soccer stadium in the Sinsheim district of Hoffenheim . From 1999 to 2008 it was the home of the first men's team of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , which has been promoted to the next higher division four times since 2000, most recently in May 2008 when they were promoted to the Bundesliga . The stadium is named after Dietmar Hopp , the club's patron who privately financed the stadium.

history

The stadium was completed in 1999, together with a neighboring artificial turf pitch, to mark the club's 100th birthday, replacing the sports field and the former clubhouse previously located there. It initially offered 5000 seats, including 1620 covered seats. The stadium was inaugurated with a friendly match against FC Bayern Munich . In the Regionalliga season 2005/06, an average of around 2000 spectators came to the home games, in the following season 2006/07, which brought promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga , the average attendance rose to 3000.

In order to meet the requirements of the German Football League (DFL) for a second division stadium, numerous renovations were carried out in the summer of 2007. Since then, the Dietmar Hopp Stadium has a capacity of around 6,350 spectators, of which 3,000 are seated. Except for the 350 standing spaces on the back straight, all of the spaces are covered.

At the same time as this renovation, construction of a larger stadium on Autobahn 6 in Sinsheim began in 2007 . In January 2009, the club moved into the Rhein-Neckar-Arena , which can accommodate around 30,000 spectators; After the promotion to the Bundesliga, the home games in the first half of the 2008/09 season were temporarily played in Mannheim's Carl Benz Stadium .

use

In addition to the TSG Hoffenheim games in the Association League , Oberliga , Regional League and 2nd Bundesliga , the Dietmar Hopp Stadium was also the venue for several national junior games, a game in the 2001 DFB League Cup between SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund and the unique home location of the women's National team that lost 1-0 to Norway on July 21, 2004 in front of 6,257 spectators in preparation for the 2004 Summer Olympics .

The Dietmar Hopp Stadium will continue to be used by the 2nd team playing in the Regionalliga Südwest , the club's youth teams and the women's team, which was promoted to the Bundesliga in 2013 .
