Dionysius bar Salibi

Dionysios ( Yaqob ) Bar Salibi (* in Melitene ; † November 2, 1171 ) was a Syrian Orthodox theologian and bishop .

Live and act

He was initially a rhetorician and deacon in Melitene . At his episcopal ordination in 1148 he took the name Dionysius . He was bishop of Maras and later also of Mabbug . From 1155 to 1156 he was held captive by Armenians in Maras. In 1166 he became Metropolitan of Amida .

He was a very prolific theological writer whose extensive works have not all been edited. He is considered the most important author of Syrian Renaissance literature. He wrote commentaries on all of the Old and New Testaments . He also wrote works on Gregory of Nazianzen , Gregory of Nyssa , Porphyrios and Aristotle as well as writings on the faith of the Syrian Church , a chronicle and much more. The book on theology, previously thought to be lost, has recently been found again by Gabriel Rabo . He also emerged through tracts against Islam, against the Jews and the Nestorians and Chalcedonians .
