Portrait of Prince Diponegoro (1835)

Diponegoro or Prince Dipanegara (born November 11, 1785 in Yogyakarta on Java ; † January 8, 1855 in Makassar on Sulawesi ) was a Javanese freedom fighter in the Javanese War (1825-1830) against the Dutch colonial power.

Prince Dipanegara was born as the eldest son of Sultan Hamengkubuwono III in Yogyakarta. After the Sultan's death, he was twice passed over in the line of succession.

After various unpopular measures by the Netherlands (tax increases etc.) Diponegoro, who also knew the Javanese nobility behind him, started a guerrilla war against the colonial rulers .

Although at the beginning he always had the upper hand, he finally lost it, also because he lost more and more support within his own ranks. After negotiations with the occupiers, he was exiled to the island of Sulawesi in 1830, first in Manado then last in Makassar, where he died in 1855.

He is now considered one of the most famous national heroes of Indonesia .

His autobiographical chronicle, the Babad Diponegoro , was declared World Document Heritage in 2013 . The University of Diponegoro (UNDIP) in Semarang is named after him.
