Member of the Thuringian Parliament

In the state elections in Thuringia in 2009 , the Greens were able to return to the state parliament for the first time in 15 years. Adams was elected to the state parliament at number 2 on the state list. In the parliamentary group, Adams is the political spokesman for the subjects of economy, work, tourism and energy as well as home affairs and communal matters. Adams serves on the Economics, Labor, and Technology Committee and the Home Committee. Furthermore, during the 5th legislative period, Adams was a member of the investigative committee 5/1 (right-wing terrorism and action by the authorities), deputy chairman of the investigative committee 5/2 (clarification of the undercover activities of the former NPD functionary Kai-Uwe Trinkaus for the Thuringian state office for the protection of the constitution) as well as a member of the parliamentary control commission.

In the election of the candidate list for the state elections in Thuringia in 2014 , Adams was elected to second place by the state delegates' conference in Erfurt on November 29, 2013. As a direct candidate for the state election in Thuringia 2014, Adams ran unsuccessfully in constituency 26 (Erfurt III) and obtained a mandate for the 6th Thuringian state parliament via the state list. After Anja Siegesmund was appointed Environment Minister in the Ramelow I cabinet , he was elected chairman of the parliamentary group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen on December 10, 2014.

In the district election in the Nordhausen district on April 26, 2015, Adams achieved 3.9 percent.

In the state elections in Thuringia in 2019 , Adams again ran alongside Anja Siegesmund as the top candidate. The Greens suffered a slight loss of votes and, due to the entry of the FDP, are now only represented by five parliamentarians in the state parliament. Adams moved again via the state list and was unanimously re-elected by his group as group chairman on November 8, 2019. On March 17, 2020, he resigned from his state parliament mandate. For him moved Babett Pfefferlein according to the state parliament. His successor in the parliamentary group chairmanship was Astrid Rothe-Beinlich .
