Dirk Jora (also: "Dicken", "DJ Celtic", "Swami Assango"; born 1960 in Hamburg-Hamm ) was the singer of the punk band Slime . He also sang for the CIA and Rubberslime .

life and career

Jora grew up as the son of a sailor and a housewife with pop music. As a teenager, he radicalized himself in the Hamburg squatter scene . He first sang in the band The Circulatory Collapse.

In 1979 he became a member of the punk band Slime under the name “Dicken”, which was founded shortly before by guitarist Michael “Elf” Mayer , bassist Sven “Eddie” Räther and drummer Peter “Ball” Wodok. As a singer and front man, he contributes to the success of the band.

Slime broke up shortly after the release of their fourth album Live in Berlin in 1984, partly because of a split relationship with the scene. The drummer Stephan Mahler explained: “The accusation that we had become commercial got on our nerves terribly. (...) On the other hand, we were the “heroes” for other, large parts of the punk scene. (...) We didn't want to be heroes and some people wanted us to be. At that time we saw no other solution than to stop. " Nevertheless, the band continued to play isolated concerts with the old line-up. In 1990 there was a reunion and the two albums Viva la Muerte and Schweinherbst were created . In 1994 the band split up again.

In 1998 Jora founded the band CIA with his former bandmate Elf. The album, codenamed Freibeuter, and a short tour followed, after which Jora left the band and the CIA disbanded. CIA also published in cooperation with Axel Kurth from the band WIZO and Bela B. a cover version of Rio Reiser's song King of Germany .

In 2003, former members of the bands Slime and Rubbermaids formed the band Rubberslime . The reason for the founding of this supergroup was a solidarity concert for FC St. Pauli . The band also wrote the song Viva St. Pauli for the club . Jora now performed under the name of DJ Celtic, based on his favorite club Celtic Glasgow , and often wore the club's jersey. The albums First Attack (2004) and Rock'n'Roll Comrades (2005) were created. In 2005 the band separated from Jora for personal reasons.

In 2008 Jora was interviewed in the punk film Chaostage - We Are Punks! (Director: Tarek Ehlail ) with. Even old hits from Slime found their place in the cinema.

Since 2010, Jora and Elf have reunited with new band members to form the band Slime and performed regularly on different stages. At the end of July 2020, Jora announced that she was leaving the band. In a personal statement, Jora referred to "insurmountable internal problems" and spoke, among other things, of differences in the practical implementation of texts from the last Slime album and in the question of how the band should deal with crew and band members.

Others

When there was a confrontation with right-wing extremists at a concert in Berlin's Pankehallen in 1984, Jora shouted in a now famous announcement: "Watch out, you fuckers - yes? We don't care if someone comes from Berlin, from Hamburg or otherwise We don't give a shit, you see? Don't give a shit if someone is black or white, doesn't give a shit if someone is Turkish or German, doesn't give a shit! Do you understand me, you wankers? Yes? And all the people want us to play . And you little bunch of shit won't fuck this concert in the ass, otherwise it'll be in the face, as full and long as you've never got in your face in your life! Sure, or what? "

According to a booklet by Slime, after the song Polizei SA / SS was banned, forty police officers were hidden under the stage during a concert. In the event that the band would play the song, they should dissolve the event. Dirk Jora reported to the concert-goers about the waiting officers and then the band played the forbidden song. The police allegedly stayed under the stage for fear of the angry mob.
