Dirty Wars (German: Dirty Wars ) is a 2013 documentary turned director Richard Rowley . The producer and screenwriter is the journalist Jeremy Scahill . Scahill also wrote a non-fiction book based on the research on the film and in German under the title Schmutzige Kriege. America's Secret Command Operations appeared ( ISBN 978-3-88897-868-5 ).

The subject of the film is the many facets and scenes of the covert , worldwide waged US war on terror , in particular the operations of the United States Joint Special Operations Command .

The investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill travels to Afghanistan , Yemen , Somalia and other places where the United States a war on terror cause. In Afghanistan, he is investigating how the US tried to cover up the deaths of five Afghans, including two pregnant women and a teenage girl, in Khataba. Scahill meets with American soldiers and Afghan civilians and speaks about the subject. One of his interlocutors is the US Senator Ron Wyden .

Scahill is investigating the murder of US citizen Anwar al-Awlaki and his son Abdulrahman al-Awlaki in Yemen. Scahill considers the war on terror to be a " self-fulfilling prophecy " because the civilian casualties lead to more Muslims fighting the US. He also covers the Yemeni journalist Abdulelah Haider Shaye , who was arrested and convicted of terrorist support for reporting on the US drone war.

On German television

A 45-minute short version of the film was produced under the title Dirty Wars - The Secret Commando Actions of the USA on behalf of the North German Broadcasting Corporation and was broadcast for the first time on the first television program at the end of November 2013 .

criticism

Dirty Wars got 85% good reviews in Rotten Tomatoes . Metacritic also scored a vast majority of reviews as positive (76% out of 18 reviews).

Trevor Johnston praised the film for its style and that he, the politics behind Obama's facade as the good man (good guy) illuminated.
