The Division 2 1976/77 was the 38th staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. Racing Club Strasbourg became second division champion .

societies

The 27 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and six promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). So this season the following teams played for the division 2 championship : Relegated

The respective group winners and the winner of the play-offs between the two runners- up were eligible for promotion . There was no relegation between the worst-placed first division clubs who were not directly relegated and the best second division clubs who were not directly eligible for promotion this time either.

Season course

Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. The bonus point regulation to promote attacking football had been abolished this season. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.

With Strasbourg and Monaco, two of the three first division relegated teams managed to immediately return to Division 1 , while three teams (Gueugnon, Toulon and Rouen) had a chance to make the third promoted team until the last day of the match. This was finally achieved in the Barrages by the “Red Devils” from Rouen . Among the newcomers from the third division, the three teams in Group B (Lucé, Quimper and Nœux) finished the season in the upper half of the table, while in the other group all three teams fought against immediate relegation, which ultimately only Arles could avoid , while Bourges and Tavaux-Damparis - together with traditional FC Sète - were beaten relatively early. 1,618 hits were scored in the 612 encounters; this corresponds to an average of 2.64 goals per game. The most successful goal scorers were Delio Onnis (Monaco) with 30 goals in Group A and Albert Gemmrich (Strasbourg) with 24 goals in Group B ; the league top scorer thus won the Argentine Onnis.

The following season came with SCO Angers , OSC Lille and Stade Rennes three relegated from Division 1 ; six teams were promoted directly from the third highest division, namely Olympique Alès , US Melun , SR Haguenau , EA Guingamp , AS Poissy and FC Limoges .
