Docusate sodium is a surface-active substance that is used, for example, as a medicinal substance , as a pharmaceutical auxiliary or as a cosmetic ingredient.
Use in medicine
In medicine, docusate sodium is used as a laxative . After introduction into the rectum, for example as an enema or rectal gel, the reduction in interfacial tension causes an increase in the water content and thus a softening of the stool, which leads to a defecation stimulus and rapid emptying within 5 to 20 minutes . Areas of application are the symptomatic treatment of constipation ( constipation ) and the preparation of the colon and rectum for endoscopic examinations.
Docusate is also used to remove cerumen .
Technical use
The potassium analog of docusate sodium is contained in a lead substitute for classic car engines.
