Domenico Capranica (born May 31, 1400 in Capranica Prenestina , † July 14, 1458 in Rome ) was a humanist and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He studied canonical and civil law in Padua and Bologna , among others with Giuliano Cesarini , whose elevation to cardinal was to be published in the same consistory as that of Capranica (1430). Domenico Capranica was elected Bishop of Fermo in 1425 . In the consistory on July 23, 1423 Pope Martin V elevated him to cardinal in pectore , which was only published in November 1430, at the same time Pope Martin assigned him the title diakonia Santa Maria in Via Lata . In 1443 or 1444 he was promoted to cardinal priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme , but kept his old titular deaconry in Commendam . Capranica held both titles until his death. He took part in the conclave in 1447 .

The city palace Palazzo Capranica , built around 1451 for Cardinal Domenico Capranica, is one of the few examples of Gothic secular architecture of the 15th century in Rome. He took part in the 1455 conclave . In 1457 he founded the Collegio Capranica , which was further supported by his brother Angelo after the death of the founder . The cardinal died in Rome in 1458 and is buried in the Cappella Capranica of the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .

In 1452 he wrote a death book , the Speculum artis bene moriendi (also Ars bene moriendi), which appeared in German as early as 1473.
