Dominika Cibulková (born May 6, 1989 in Bratislava ) is a former Slovak tennis player .

Career

Cibulková, who started tennis at the age of seven, played her first ITF tournament in Prague in 2004 . She won two individual titles at the ITF Women's Circuit , 2005 in Amarante ( Portugal ) and 2006 in her hometown Bratislava . There are six individual titles on the WTA Tour . In January 2009 she won the Hopman Cup for Slovakia alongside Dominik Hrbatý . Her career highlights were the 2014 final at the Australian Open and winning the unofficial World Cup in Singapore in 2016.

2010-2011

Cibulková reached the third round in Paris and Wimbledon in 2010 and reached the quarter-finals of the US Open . In 2011, she threw world number one Caroline Wozniacki out of the tournament at Wimbledon , but then lost to Marija Sharapova clearly 1: 6, 1: 6 in the quarter-finals . At the Stanford hard court tournament she reached the semifinals, to which she could not compete due to injury. In Linz she lost the final 4: 6, 1: 6 against Petra Kvitová . At the Kremlin Cup in Moscow she was finally able to celebrate her first WTA title, in the final she defeated Kaia Kanepi 3: 6, 7: 6 1 and 7: 5.

2012-2013

At the Australian Open , she only made it to round two in 2012. In February she reached the play-off round with the Slovak Fed Cup team for participation in the world group; she lost her singles in Bratislava to Virginie Razzano , but won against Pauline Parmentier . At the clay court tournament in Barcelona , she reached the final, but then had to admit defeat Sara Errani 2: 6, 2: 6. At the French Open she caused a surprise when she pushed the world number one Wiktoryja Asaranka 6: 2, 7: 6 4 out of the tournament in the round of 16 . In the quarterfinals she was eliminated from the former finalist Samantha Stosur . At Wimbledon, she already failed in round one. At the start of the US hard court season, she won her second title on the tour in San Diego with a final win over Marion Bartoli (6: 1, 7: 5).

Cibulková secured her third WTA title again on hard court. At the Stanford tournament in 2013, after beating Stefanie Vögele , Urszula Radwańska and Sorana Cîrstea in the final, she also defeated number 4 in the world, Agnieszka Radwańska .

2014

At the Australian Open , she reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time after winning over Francesca Schiavone , Stefanie Vögele , Carla Suárez Navarro , Marija Sharapowa, Simona Halep and Agnieszka Radwańska . She was defeated there by Li Na with 6: 7 3 and 0: 6. She won her fourth WTA title again on hard court in Acapulco . At the Sony Open in Miami, she made it to the semifinals. In the quarter-finals she was able to fend off three match points against Radwańska and turn the game around. This was the first time she was in the top ten of the WTA world rankings .

Since 2015

At the Australian Open , Cibulková made it to the quarter-finals this time. In March 2015, she underwent an operation on her left leg. At the end of June she intervened again in the tournament, at the US Open she reached the third round. At Wimbledon , Cibulková was only eliminated in the quarterfinals in 2016, where she was defeated by Jelena Wesnina in two sets. In July, she again achieved her record from March 2014 (10th place) in the WTA ranking. With her tournament victory in Linz she qualified for the first time for the WTA Finals , where she surprisingly made it into the final. She returned the favor there for the preliminary round defeat against Angelique Kerber by defeating the world number one with 6: 3 and 6: 4, and thus made it into the top 5 for the first time. In November 2019, she announced the end of her career.
