Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (born June 30, 1965 in Strasbourg ) is a French installation , video and conceptual artist.

life and work

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster grew up in Grenoble , where she studied at the École du Magasin of the National Center of Contemporary Art and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Fritz Schwegler until 1987. In 1989 she completed her studies at the Institute des Hautes Études en Arts Plastiques in Paris.

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster began making short films in the 1990s. Over the years she has expanded her artistic work to include various media. Projections, photography and room installations were added. She worked with Pierre Huyghe , Liam Gillick and Rirkrit Tiravanija .

She wrote science fiction with Philippe Parreno and created sets for rock singer Alain Bashung and chansonnier Christophe . She worked with the Balenciaga fashion house in New York and Paris and designed a house for a collector in Tokyo.

“Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster's works are often characterized by biographical and literary hints. They are evolving narratives that can slowly be deduced from incomplete set pieces, from photographs, specially arranged interiors and personal details. These fragments are researched by Gonzalez-Foerster and interpreted as "clues" for the viewer, who then undertakes the "reparage" (Gonzalez-Foerster) of the story. "

For the 2015/2016 season in the Vienna State Opera , Gonzalez-Foerster designed the large picture (176 m²) “Helen & Gordon” - a homage to a famous photograph by Helen Frankenthaler , as part of the “Iron Curtain” exhibition series conceived by museum in progress Gordon Parks commissioned Life Magazine in the 1950s .
