After her first leading role in Jean-Marie Poiré's comedy Les Petits câlins (1978), she worked in the same year with the French director Jacques Doillon , representative of the Nouveau Naturel (German: "New Naturalness") in French cinema in the 1970s. Doillon's drama The Woman Who Weeps is inspired by a series of portraits that Pablo Picasso created in 1937 of his then partner Dora Maar . It tells the story of a young wife and mother who is forced into an open love triangle by her husband (played by Jacques Doillon). For her fifth film role, in which, according to her own statements, she did not play or identify with the character of the same name, but rather saw every situation as a real one, Laffin was nominated for the most important French film award, the César , for Best Actress in 1980 . However, Laffin was defeated by her colleague Miou-Miou ( The Dropout ).
