Domitia Longina (* before 55; † between 126 and 140) was a Roman matrona and wife of Emperor Domitian .

Life

Domitia Longina was the daughter of General Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo , who was driven to suicide by Nero in 67 , and his wife Cassia Longina . She was married to Lucius Aelius Plautius Lamia Aelianus in 69 at the latest , but attracted the attention of Domitian , the son of Emperor Vespasian . A short time later she was taken from her husband and married to the future emperor in 70. They had a son in 73 (71 according to other sources) and a daughter three years later, both of whom died young. The son, who was promoted to Divus after his death , was depicted sitting on a globe on the reverse of a denarius bearing the portrait of Domitia on its obverse. In 81 Domitia was given the title of Augusta .

Domitian loved his wife and took her with him on all his travels, but was nevertheless often seen with other women and had an enormous number of lovers. At the same time, he by no means tolerated similar freedom of movement from his wife. There were rumors that she had cheated on her husband with his brother Titus . In 83, Domitia Longina's affair with actor Paris was revealed. Paris was executed and Domitia received the letter of divorce. It was banned but remained close to Domitian and Roman politics. In 96 she played a decisive role in the success of the plot against the unpopular emperor. Domitia Longina's name is documented on bricks until the year 126. She died before the year 140 when her freedmen built a temple in Gabii .

Her image rarely appears on coins from the time of Domitian's reign.
