Don Balón was an internationally respected football magazine published weekly by Don Balón SA from October 7, 1975 to September 2011 in Barcelona, Spain . Don Balón also had its own edition for Chile . The founder was Josep Maria Casanovas (also José María ~ ), previously a journalist at Mundo Deportivo and also editor-in-chief of FC Barcelona Edel-Fanzine Sport , which he founded in 1979 - both also from Barcelona. In 1989 Don Balón became a member of European Sports Magazines , which later became European Sports Magazines , an amalgamation of leading European sports magazines such as kicker , A Bola and World Soccer .
Don Balón also published numerous special editions such as Todofútbol , Extra: Liga , Extra: Copas Europeas - and in South America also in several years for the Copa Libertadores . Since 1976, the magazine has awarded the prestigious Premios Don Balón for the best Spanish player, the best foreign player and the best coach in the Spanish Primera División. Between 1984 and 1997 Don Balón also awarded the Premios Literarios Don Balón for various contributions to sports literature, such as essays and novels but also poetry.
On September 6, 2011, the immediate discontinuation of the magazine was announced. The reasons were persistent economic bottlenecks and ultimately the arrest of editor-in-chief Rogelio Rengel Mercadé for embezzlement.
