Don McLean
Donald "Don" McLean (born October 2, 1945 in New Rochelle , New York ) is an American singer and songwriter . His most famous piece is the eight and a half minute ballad American Pie .
Beginnings and American Pie
The son of an electronics sales representative met Pete Seeger at an event held by the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater in 1969 . Despite a dedication by Seeger, he offered his first LP Tapestry to 37 record companies to no avail . The album then sold slowly but steadily. The 1971 song American Pie was very successful financially for McLean. It pays homage to Buddy Holly , who died in a plane crash in 1959 : " The Day the Music Died ". After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , the Clear Channel Communications radio network published a list of 166 songs with the recommendation not to broadcast them for the time being. American pie was among them.
More songs
Don McLean learned folk and jazz with the help of the music of Tim Hardin , Leadbelly , Bessie Smith , Bobby Short and Count Basie . His idol, however, was only Buddy Holly . McLean's song Empty Chairs inspired singer Lori Lieberman to write the poem Killing Me Softly with His Song ; Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel made the song of the same name out of it. Roberta Flack made the song a hit in 1973. The version of the Fugees was again a worldwide chart success in 1996.
Other well-known titles by McLean are Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) , which is dedicated to the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh , Castles in the Air and Winterwood . In 1981 McLean had an international hit with a cover version of the Roy Orbison classic Crying . In Great Britain the single rose to number 1 on the charts. Orbison himself once described McLean as "the voice of the century".
