Location and economy

Dongen lies in a boggy landscape, on the Donge River , a tributary of the Meuse , and on the Wilhelminakanal . In the south Dongen is bounded by Rijen , and in the east by Waalwijk and Tilburg . The village of 's Gravenmoer is a little further north than Dongen. Dongen belongs to the "Langstraat" region. Several motorways , the A27 Utrecht - Breda , the A58 and the A59 , run through the municipality of Dongen.

Tanneries and other leather processing companies have been active here since the 17th century . In addition there is, especially in the small Gravenmoer, agriculture, and a lot of trade and small businesses. The municipality also has two hotels and some campsites. In Dongen there is also a very old "kweekschool" founded by Franciscan women. This is a school where young people are trained to be primary school teachers. The modern name in the Netherlands for such a school is PABO (Pedagogische Academie Basisonderwijs).

history

The name Dongen stands for: Donk an dem Bach Aa. 's Gravenmoer means: Moor of the Count (of Holland ).

Dongen was built before the 13th century on two sand ridges, "donken" (cf. Winnekendonk in North Rhine-Westphalia ), where the first churches were built. As in Tilburg and many other places in Brabant , there is still the relatively high, triangular village square called "Heuvel" (= hill). Three old trade routes from Breda, Oosterhout and Herzogenbusch came together here. Later, a 5 km long village street between these "Donken" where the farms emerged was the people running the fen made arable. In 1281 Wilhelm van Hoorne and Altena, Lord of Loon op Zand , founded the Glory Dongen. This came into the hands of the powerful Mr. Willem van Duvenvoorde in the 14th century. He had a castle built in Dongen (which was destroyed by fire in 1656 and then completely demolished). Up until the 17th century agriculture was the main source of income for the population. Then came the manufacture of boots made of leather in the tanning industry and in the 18th century. After 1860, this was increasingly done in factories. Dongen expanded strongly after 1960 through the settlement of commuters from the surrounding cities.

's Gravenmoer was not in North Brabant until 1672, but in Zuid-Holland . The trade in and the extraction of peat was very important here. After around 1650, the hay trade took its place. Because of belonging to Holland, the population also became Protestant, while Dongen itself, as usual in the rest of Brabant, remained predominantly Catholic. Between 's Gravenmoer and Dongen ran the border between these areas, which for centuries also formed a sharp cultural border. It was not until 1973 that the villages were merged into one municipality.
