Village judge (Austrian Empire)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A village judge was in imperial Austria to repeal the basic rule of the head of the village court of a village community. The village judge supervised and administered the village community and decided in minor matters within the framework of the village rules and in the name of the landlord, because the jurisdiction was generally incumbent on the landlord, who used a village judge for the activities on site. (This does not mean a dish in the current sense.)

The village judge was previously appointed by the landlord and later elected by the village community and confirmed by the landlord. As an auxiliary body of the land authority, it was responsible for maintaining and monitoring the submissive community. Its tasks included the administration of the municipal property, the representation of the municipality in the rulership, the execution of official orders, the collection and repayment of taxes, the catering and supply of the military, the provision of the prescribed number of recruits, the maintenance of law and order in the community, checking weights and measures and much more. Until 1848 the village judge was the lowest level of public administration.

Although the office officially ceased to exist in 1848, tradition is very important in some parts of Austria and important tasks within the village community are still carried out by a village judge.

Comparable names for it were in Germany: Dorfschulze, Bauer- or Dorfmeister, Grebe , Schultheiß , Primus court, home citizen or mayor .
