With the organizational and functional changes, the names of the orchestra also changed: from the Hüttner Kapelle to the municipal orchestra , the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Dortmund to the Dortmund Philharmonic . The program and quality of the orchestra were largely determined by the orchestra conductors, who were often active for many years in the early years of the orchestra.

The orchestra has now grown to 102 musicians and has an excellent reputation among the large concert and opera orchestras in North Rhine-Westphalia .

In October 2006 the orchestra performed in China under Arthur Fagen , a. a. Shanghai and Beijing . Arthur Fagen also gave guest performances in Salzburg (Großes Festspielhaus), the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Brussels (Palais des Beaux Arts).
