Drăgășani is located in the west of the Wallachian Plain in the Olt river plain and is surrounded by some foothills of the Southern Carpathians . The district capital Râmnicu Vâlcea is about 50 km north.
history
The area of the present city was already settled in the Paleolithic and the Neolithic . In Roman times , the Momoteşti castle was located in the area of today's city . Drăgășani was first mentioned in a document in 1535. A market and a crossing over the Olt are mentioned in 1772. On June 19, 1821 there was a battle between the troops of Alexander Ypsilantis and Ottoman units near the place ; it was one of the first combat operations of the Greek Revolution .
1995 Drăgășani got the status of a municipality - d. H. a more important city - awarded.
For a long time the city lived from agriculture, mainly from viticulture . In 1970 one of the largest industrial companies in the city - FINCA ( fabrică de talpă și încălțăminte din cauciuc , German "company for shoe soles and shoes made of rubber") - with around 2000 employees, was established.
In 2008, Drăgășani was mentioned in the German-language press as one of the centers of organized online crime.

In 1912, 6710 residents were registered in Drăgășani. By 1992 the population grew to 22,126; since then there has been a decline. In the 2002 census, the city registered 20,798 inhabitants, including 20,571 Romanians , 199 Roma , 6 Hungarians and 2 Germans .

Drăgășani is located on the railway line between Piatra-Olt and Râmnicu Vâlcea, which runs in the Olt Valley . Express and local trains run several times a day on this line. There are regular bus connections to Râmnicu Vâlcea and Bucharest , among others . Drăgășani is located on the national road (Drum național) DN 64 from Caracal to Râmnicu Vâlcea.
