Dragan Umičević (born October 9, 1984 in Bosanska Dubica , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Swedish ice hockey player of Bosnian origin who has been under contract with EHC Linz in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League since May 2018 .

Career

Dragan Umičević's family moved to Sweden when he was four years old and here he started playing ice hockey as a child at the ice hockey club in Köping, IK Westmannia and its successor club, Köping HC. In his youth he then moved to Södertälje SK , a club which at that time was active in Sweden's top ice hockey league (SHL) . In 2003 Umičević was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers for the NHL in 184 position in the 6 round. Although he dreams of a career in the NHL, he did not want to move to North America at this time to increase his chances of playing this league. After Södertälje relegated to the second highest division (Allsvenskan) after the 2005/06 season, moved to Djurgårdens IF for the coming season . In the 2007/08 season he played at HK ZSKA Moscow in the KHL , but returned after 9 games (2 goals) in the Swedish league to Södertälje SK, which had been promoted back to the first Swedish division for this season. After he was the best points player for his team Södertälje in the 2008/09 season, he moved to the reigning champions Färjestad BK for the next season . After a season with the Malmö Redhawks in the second highest Swedish league , he switched to the highest Finnish ice hockey league (Liiga) for the next two seasons , in which his qualities as a goal setter were particularly valued.

In the 2014/15 season he was committed to the relegation battle of EHC Biel from the highest Swiss ice hockey league (NLA) and was able to contribute to the club's relegation with 16 points (6 goals, 10 assists) in the remaining 15 games, so that he also was signed for the coming season . In this EHC Biel was able to reach the play-offs, but due to the new signing of Tim Stapleton in the foreign contingent of Biel, a further cooperation with the Swiss club was not possible. Dragan Umičević moved to the Cologne Sharks in the German ice hockey league (DEL) for the 2015/16 season , where he again played with his compatriot Per Åslund , as in Färjestad . On the 10th matchday (October 11, 2015) of the season he scored his first DEL goal in the game against the Eisbären Berlin . With 42 points he was the third best scorer and with 35 assists the best preparer of the Haie in the 2015/16 season , but his contract was not extended by the Cologne team after the season.

At the beginning of August 2016, Cologne's league rival Krefeld Pinguine announced Umičević's commitment. He signed a contract until 2018. In particular in his second season for the Niederrhein team in the 2017/18 season , he again impressed as a preparer and was one of the most successful goal assistants in the league with 31 assists .

On May 1, 2018, the EHC Linz announced the Swede's commitment. He signed a two-year contract until 2020.

International

Umičević played international matches for various Swedish junior national teams - in 2002 he took part in the world championships for this age group with the Swedish U18 national team. In 2006 and 2007 he played a total of six international matches for the Swedish national ice hockey team .
