overview 2

The three- cushion world championship for national teams is organized by the Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) in the game of carom billiards (three- cushion discipline) , for the first time in 1981 in Mexico City .

history

After the next World Championships still took place irregularly - 1985 in Bordeaux (France) and 1987 in Madrid (Spain) - they have been an annual highlight in the tournament calendar of three-cushion sports since 1990 in February and have found a venue appropriate for the event in the Festhalle Viersen .

The UMB and the Confédération Européenne de Billard (CEB) have entrusted the German Billiards Union (DBU) with hosting the three-cushion World Cup until 2014; so the World Cup will remain in Viersen until then. After the 2015 World Cup, the city of Viersen was no longer able to cover the funding gap of € 12,500. After long negotiations, a new sponsor was found in Sparda-Bank West. The World Cup in Viersen is thus secured for the next three years. After the three years the Viersen company SAB Bröckskes found a new main sponsor of the world championship. This means that the three-cushion team championship will remain in Viersen until 2023.

Up to 2013, 31 different nations had participated in the World Cup. A total of 6 teams took part in the first three world championships; from the 4th to the 10th there were 12 teams. 18 to 24 teams started in the following tournaments. Japan was the only country to have participated in all world championships.

Records

In 2013, the Dutchman Dick Jaspers improved the tournament record for the highest series of 17 points, which has been in place since 1974 , set by Belgian Raymond Ceulemans , by 5 points to now 22. Eddy Merckx improved Dick Jaspers' individual average (ED) record from the previous year on March 13, 2014 . After 9  admissions , he scored 40 points, giving an individual average (ED) of 4.444 . The best general average (GD) of a player at the Team World Cup is held by Frédéric Caudron . Improved to 2,506 during the 2015 World Cup.

Belgium set a new world record in Team Average (BEMD) on March 13, 2014. In the game against Austria Eddy Merckx and Frédéric Caudron scored 80 points in 22 shots. This brings the new record to 3.636 . In the Scotch Double on February 23, 2018, the Netherlands also played 3,636 (40 points in 11 recordings) against Egypt. The tournament average record (MGD) has been held by Belgium since 2014 with 2,195 .

Game mode

There are four match billiards in Viersen. Each team consists of two players, as a rule each nation can provide one team - the defending champion (and usually also the host) can provide a second team. From 2013 onwards it will no longer be played in the set system, but in the preliminary round (group stage) to 30 points (usually in groups of three teams) and from the quarter-finals to 40 points. Since 2014, the whole tournament has been played over a game distance of 40 points. No 3rd place has been played since 2004. So there are two bronze medals.

Since 2017, the entire tournament has been played in " Scotch Doubles mode". As early as 2015, a tie between two teams was played in the "Scotch Doubles mode" to decide.

On the final day of the 2017 World Cup, the President of the UMB , Farouk el-Barki , announced that from 2018 the tournament will only be played with 16 teams instead of the previous 24. There will be a preliminary round with four groups of four players each. The two best in the group will then move into the final round.

"That will further increase the quality, but we will also have to have a more restrictive invitation policy."

- Farouk el-Barki : Markus Schönhoff, Kozoom , March 12, 2017

Scoring, ranking and prize money

Until 2017

In contrast to other tournaments, this tournament has a ranking list based on the total number of places. The teams were assigned the number of their final placement as minus points, i.e. the winner (1st place) receives 1 point, the second (2nd place) 2 points and so on. Teams that did not register for the tournament received 25 penalty points and teams that registered but did not take part received 50 penalty points. So it was important to collect as few points as possible.

Since 2018

In 2018, the usual point system as in World Cup tournaments was switched to. The teams receive points according to the following classification:
