The tri-colored Jamaican carp ( Limia melanogaster ), also known as the black-bellied carp , is a freshwater ornamental fish from the viviparous toothcarp family .

features

Males of this species grow to 4 to 4.5 cm, females 5.5 to 6 cm. The physique is slim, the head small and pointed. Young animals show an olive-green and gray-brown basic color. Adult specimens also show a glossy blue overlying the other colors. The blue color is particularly pronounced in the males. From the middle of the body to the base of the caudal fin, both sexes show several black horizontal stripes. The females have an unusually large gestation spot that can make up half of the abdominal region. In no other species from the genus Limia does the gestation spot reach this size. The fins are tinted yellow. The dorsal and caudal fins of alpha males can also have a black border.

Occurrence and way of life

The Kärpfling is endemic to Jamaica . It occurs there in clean, shallow and fast-flowing waters with little vegetation as well as adjacent swamp areas with rich swamp and underwater vegetation. The waters it inhabits often heat up to 30 ° C due to the shallow depth.

Reproduction

The females give birth to 20 to 60, rarely more, live young approximately every four weeks . The fry are about six millimeters long at birth. They usually reach sexual maturity after five months.

Aquaristics

The Jamaican parrot was first introduced to Germany in 1908. It needs well-planted aquariums with a minimum length of 80 cm, as the males drive the females strongly. There are no great demands on the water values, only the water hardness should not be too low (20–30 °  GH ). There are no special requirements for feeding, but sufficient algae feed increases the vitality of the fish. The Jamaican Parrot is a persistent and easy to breed fish species. By selection, aquarium populations are much more intensely colored than wild-caught fish.

Although the Kärpflinge avoid brackish water zones in their homeland, they completely get used to salt water.
