Drogo sacramentary
The Drogo Sacramentary is a Carolingian illuminated manuscript that was written in Metz between 850 and 855 . The sacramentary was commissioned by Archbishop Drogo von Metz (823–855), an illegitimate son of Charlemagne . It was intended for use in Metz Cathedral . The style of Metz book painting was based on the court school of Charlemagne .
The codex comprises 130 sheets of parchment , its format is 264 x 214 mm. The book decoration consists of 41 historicized initials , i. H. Decorative letters with figurative scenes. All headings and parts of the text are written in gold ink.
The manuscript remained in the possession of Metz Cathedral until it was brought to Paris in 1802. Today the magnificent manuscript is in the Paris Bibliothèque Nationale (Ms. lat. 9428).
