Distribution of Drosera stelliflora in Australia

Drosera stelliflora is a carnivorous plant belonging to the genus sundew ( Drosera ). It belongs to the group of so-called dwarf sundews and is native to southwestern Australia.

description

Drosera stelliflora is a perennial herbaceous plant . This dwarf sundew , which forms a hemispherical rosette of horizontal and semi-upright leaves, reaches a diameter of about 2.5 cm. The stem axis is up to 2.5 cm long and covered with the withered leaves of the preseason.

The bud of the stipules is ovate, 6 mm long and 4 mm wide. The stipules themselves are 6 mm long, 6 mm wide and three-lobed. The middle lobe is divided into 4 sections.

The up to 20 insect-catching leaf blades are elliptical, up to 2.5 mm long and 1.3 mm wide. The leaf stalks are 10 mm long, 1 mm wide at the base and taper to 0.5 mm at the leaf blade.

The 1 to 4 inflorescence axes are up to 4 cm long and almost completely hairless. The inflorescence is a coil of up to 40 crowded flowers on approximately 1.5 mm long pedicels. The broad, egg-shaped sepals are 1.8 mm long, 1.2 mm wide and slightly irregular at the edges. The surface is smooth. The white petals are lanceolate, 2 mm long and 0.6 mm wide.

The ovary is approximately circular and 0.4 mm in diameter. The 3 horizontally stretched, curved styluses are 0.3 mm long. The 0.3 mm long scars are club-shaped or sickle-shaped. Fruit and seeds are unknown.

The formation of brood scales is typical of dwarf sundews .

Distribution, habitat and status

Drosera stelliflora occurs only on a small area in the extreme southwest of Australia. It thrives there especially on laterite soils, which are sometimes mixed with sand with little silicic acid content. The holotype was found on the bank of the stream along the motocross track east of North Jindong Road, south of Busselton.

Systematics

The name stelliflora comes from Latin and means "star-shaped flower" ( stelli = star; flora = flower), which refers to the shape of the flower. Drosera enodes is considered the closest relative and can be distinguished by its flower.
