You are not walking alone (Original title: Temple Grandin ) is an American television film directed by Mick Jackson from 2010 and produced by HBO . It focuses on the life of Temple Grandin , an autistic animal science specialist whose role is played by Claire Danes .

The biography has been nominated for numerous awards, including several Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award .

content

The biography portrays the life of Temple Grandin from the beginning of her college to the end of her college years. Some flashbacks also highlight her childhood. In the 1950s, a young Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism. She cannot stand physical closeness, has difficulties with social interaction and only perceives her surroundings in pictures - she has a photographic memory. Thanks to the commitment of her mother Eustacia and her teacher Dr. However, Carlock manages to graduate from high school .

Before college, Temple spends her summer vacation at her aunt Ann's farm, where she learns how to deal with animals. Later she suffers a panic attack - triggered by contact with strangers and the break with the rules that are indispensable for her. She used a kind of claw stand on the farm to recover from the panic attack . For Temple, the machine simulates and replaces a human embrace.

Even in college, which she fears because of the large number of unknown people, there are confrontations with her fellow students and sometimes also professors. They usually show no understanding of their illness. That's why she builds an apparatus in her room that resembles the claw stand on the farm. Only after she conducts her own study that scientifically proves the effectiveness of her machine in other people does the college director allow her to keep the machine. This, and the support of her blind friend Alice, enable Temple to survive and graduate successfully.

Temple Grandin finds a job in a slaughterhouse while studying animal science at a university . She takes her experience as an opportunity to write her master's thesis on the different mooing of cattle. The director of the slaughterhouse refuses, however, and Temple is again confronted with prejudice. Ultimately, she will manage to obtain the necessary approval by other means. Her master's thesis is highly praised by her professor, but also by the press.

Temple publishes further work on apparatus and construction in the livestock industry, which should make the slaughter process more efficient and, above all, less cruel for the animals. She does this by being able to put herself in the shoes of cattle. Temple Grandin thus gains national fame. Her career also enables her to learn social skills and to overcome some of the limitations of her illness. The film ends with a congress on autism, at which Temple inspires the masses with a spontaneous talk about her life story.

background

The filming of the film You Don't Go Alone began in October 2008 and took place exclusively in Texas . Temple Grandin was there himself on a few days of shooting and saw film scenes beforehand. She described her experience as "a strange journey back in time to the 60s" (original: "It was like going back in a weird time machine to the '60s."). She praised Claire Danes' acting performance. Furthermore, she was actively involved in the shooting to ensure the correct implementation of her life story as a consultant.

The premiere of the film took place on January 27, 2010 , which Grandin himself attended. On February 6th, HBO first aired the film after an extensive advertising campaign. The German TV broadcaster Arte carried out the first broadcast on December 23, 2011. The film was only moderately advertised in Germany and did not reach a wide audience.

reception

criticism

The biography You don't go alone (original Temple Grandin ) received extremely positive reviews. The film received a positive rating from 100% of the critics on the Rotten Tomatoes website . The film also stands out in the Internet Movie Database with an average rating of 8.4.

In the American press, Alessandra Stanley from the newspaper The New York Times praised the film and described it as "funny, instructive and also intangibly charming" (German: "amusing, instructive and also incredibly lovely"). Above all, Claire Danes' performance was praised. For example, Jennifer Armstrong of Entertainment Weekly wrote : “Ms. Danes is completely at ease in her subject […]. She makes Temple's anxiety as immediate and contagious as her rarer bursts of merriment ... "(German for example:" Ms. Danes is completely in her element [...]. She brings Temple's conflict across as direct and captivating as her seldom cheerfulness ... ").

The film biography was hardly covered in the German press. Only Martin Weber from the newspaper Thüringer Allgemeine calls the film "A moving story with a pleasantly cheerful undertone, far removed from sentimentality."
