The dual high school (also DOS) was a form of the regional school with grades 5 to 10. It was introduced in Rhineland-Palatinate at the beginning of the 2006/2007 school year. From grade 7, pupils at dual secondary schools were divided into two so-called profile levels, which were based either on the educational level of the Realschule or the Hauptschule . A change to the higher or lower profile level was possible every half year. Dual high schools worked together with vocational schools and prepared the students in particular for the choice of profession, e.g. B. through intensive internship phases.

In dual secondary schools, new pedagogical theories of holistic learning were implemented. Theory and practice were therefore closely related and were linked to one another in the school subject “Practice in School”. This central subject was taught from grade 6 and included the learning fields of technology , science , economics , administration , housekeeping and social affairs .

Pupils at dual secondary schools finished their school careers with the vocational qualification (the Hauptschulabschluss ) or the secondary qualification ( Mittlere Reife ). In addition, the professional maturity could be provided with a so-called qualification note, which entitles the students to skip a learning module in German, English or mathematics during their training at vocational schools.

At the beginning of the 2009/10 school year, like all regional schools in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, the dual secondary schools were converted into Realschulen plus .
