Duboisia is a plant genus with four known species of the family of the Solanaceae family . It wasfirst describedby Robert Brown in 1810. The name honors the British trader and botany supporter Charles du Bois (1656-1740).

description

Duboisia are small shrubs ( D. hopwoodii ) 1.5 to 4 meters high or trees ( Duboisia myoporoides , Duboisia leichhardtii ) up to 24 meters high. Two types have cork-like bark, the wood of the plants is very light.

The leaves are 2 to 15 cm long, oblong ovate, ovate-elliptical or linear, rarely oval or narrowly elliptical. The inflorescences are strongly branched, roughly pyramidal or closely structured; up to 15 cm long. The flower sits on a peduncle 1.5 to 16 mm long. The bell-shaped calyx is 1.5 to 4.5 mm in length, its calyx teeth are significantly shorter than the tube. The flower is bell-shaped to funnel-shaped and 4 to 19 mm long. The tips of the corolla are elongated and narrow; usually a little shorter or exactly as long as the tube. The four (sometimes five) stamens are of two different lengths, and now and then a stunted staminodium appears. The anthers are 0.5 to 1 mm long. The scar is bilobed or divided into two parts.

The fertilized flowers produce purple-black berries with a size of 4 to 5 mm (sometimes up to 8 mm), they are round or slightly flattened, rarely ellipsoid. The berries contain only a few seeds, usually only two to nine, rarely up to 12. The seeds are 2.2 to 2.3 mm long, the embryo is slightly curved.

ingredients

The plants contain poisonous alkaloids such as scopolamine , hyoscyamine , duboisin and piturin . The active pharmaceutical ingredient butylscopolamine is obtained synthetically from scopolamine .

Occurrence

The home of the Duboisia is New Caledonia and Australia . A hybrid of Duboisia myoporoides and Duboisia leichhardtii is cultivated in southern Queensland for the production of scopolamine and hyoscyamine.

Systematics

Four types are distinguished within the genus:

The type species is Duboisia myoporoides .
