Dudo of Saint-Quentin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dudo of Saint-Quentin , dean of Saint-Quentin , where he was born around 965, was a Norman chronicler of the 11th century .

He was sent in 986 by Count Adalbert I of Vermandois to Duke Richard I of Normandy . After successfully completing his mission, he stayed in Normandy for a few years. On the occasion of a second stay in Normandy, he wrote his story of the Normans De moribus et actis primorum Normanniae ducum at Richard's invitation . In addition, we only know that he died before 1043.

Dudo does not seem to have used any documents to write his work between 1015 and 1030 - his source was the oral tradition, which he received mainly from one of Richard's half-brothers, Raoul d'Ivry , Count of Bayeux from the House of Ivry . As a result, his story, which he dedicated to Bishop Adalbero von Laon , reflects the courtly point of view, which critics such as Ernst Dümmler or Georg Waitz accused him of being untrustworthy. Others, such as Jules Lair or Johannes Steenstrup , emphasize the value of the work for Norman history, without overlooking the sometimes legendary character.

Although Dudo knew Virgil and other Latin authors, his Latin is affected and obscure. Alternately written in prose and verse with different meters , the Historia reports in four parts the story of the Normans from 852 to Richard's death in 996. Wilhelm von Jumièges , Wace , Robert von Torigni , Wilhelm von Poitiers and Hugo von Fleury have largely agreed with theirs own chronicles based on Dudo. The Historia was first published in Paris in 1619 by André Duchesne in his Historia Normannorum scriptores antiqui . There is also another edition in the Patrologia Latina , volume CXLI, by Jacques Paul Migne (Paris 1844), as well as one by de Lair (Caen 1865) which is undoubtedly the best.
