ECOCERT

ECOCERT is an organic certification organization founded in 1991 in France. It is based in L'Isle-Jourdain , Département Gers , France, but carries out inspections in over 110 countries, making it one of the largest organic certification organizations in the world.

ECOCERT primarily certifies food and products, but also tests cosmetics, detergents, perfumes and textiles, social responsibility and fair trade. The organization controls 70% of the organic farming and processing industries in France and 30% worldwide.

history

ECOCERT had its predecessor in the French ACAB ( Association des Conseillers en Agriculture Biologique ), a manufacturer association founded in France in 1978, which spun off an independent control organization in 1991. It has received state support in France since 1992, followed by Belgium in 1992, and Germany and Portugal in 1995.

The organization began as a partnership between several European countries, but has gradually expanded its reach to other countries in the world. Initially, offices were set up in various countries around the world, followed by the establishment of subsidiaries, for example in Brazil, Japan and Canada in 2002. ECOCERT has been represented in China since 2006. In 2013 Ecocert took over the IMO Institut für Marktökologie GmbH and IMOswiss AG and in 2014 the IMOgroup AG.

The headquarters of the German subsidiary, Ecocert IMO GmbH, is in Konstanz , Germany, the headquarters of the Swiss subsidiary, Ecocert IMOswiss AG in Kreuzlingen , the headquarters of the Ecocert Group, ECOCERT SA, is in L'Isle-Jourdain , Département Gers .

criticism

According to reports in the Financial Times Deutschland , the private certifiers ECOCERT and Control Union were fined tens of thousands of euros after they were involved in a fraud case. The Indian agricultural authority Apeda uncovered that large quantities of genetically modified cotton were brought onto the market during the scandal .
