LUNA NG is an unmanned reconnaissance system from the German manufacturer EMT Penzberg . The system has been in development since 2010 until today.

The drone has a wingspan of 530 cm and a maximum take-off weight of 100 kg. It can stay in the air for up to 12 hours, depending on the payload. She takes off with the help of a catapule . Landing takes place on a parachute or by means of a net landing with an autonomous landing approach. The flight route is programmed before take-off, but can also be changed from the ground station during the flight.

The Pakistani Navy was the first customer to order the system in June 2012.

In July 2017, three systems and an additional training system were initially ordered by the Bundeswehr as an introduction to the replacement of the LUNA and KZO systems .

In 2019, around 130 million euros were released by the budget committee of the German Bundestag for the procurement of a further nine Luna reconnaissance systems. The 13 systems (including a training system) Luna Next Generation / Bundeswehr (Luna NG / B) thus procured replace the (6 systems with 10 drones each) small aircraft target location ( KZO ). The first system is to be used by the Army Reconnaissance Force in 2019 . The scope of delivery of a Luna NG / B system includes five unmanned aerial vehicles with electro-optical and infrared sensors, two ground control stations and the associated means of communication in protected functional containers, two telemetry antennas on trailers, workshop equipment integrated in a protected container and a spare parts package. In the standard configuration, a system includes two take-off and two landing devices. The technical documentation and training materials are also included in the scope of delivery of a system.
