Earl of Kintore is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland , which is named after the place Kintore .

The Earls family residence is Keith Hall , at Inverurie in Aberdeenshire.

Award and history of the title

The title was created on June 20, 1677 for Sir John Keith , the third son of William Keith 6th Earl Marischal . Along with the earliest title, he was awarded the subordinate title of Lord Keith of Inverurie and Keith Hall , who also belongs to the Peerage of Scotland. In the absence of male offspring, both titles can also be inherited in the female line.

From the death of the 4th Earl in 1761, the earl title was suspended because no one could prove his inheritance claim on it. In 1778 it was decided that the earldom should pass to Anthony Falconer, 8th Lord Falconer of Halkerton , the grandson of his sister, who then changed his surname to Keith-Falconer . Since 1776 he had held the Scottish title of Lord Falconer of Halkerton , created in 1646 , which was henceforth listed as a subordinate title of the Earl.

The 7th Earl was awarded the title of Baron Kintore of Kintore in the County of Aberdeen on July 5, 1838 . The title belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom . Unlike his Scottish titles, this one was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords .

With the death of the 10th Earl in 1966, the title of Baron Kintore expired and the title of Lord Falconer of Halkerton has been suspended since then.

The 12th Earl had on August 20, 1941, from his father John Baird, 1st Viscount Stonehaven, the title of 2nd Viscount Stonehaven (created 1938), 2nd Baron Stonehaven , of Ury in the, belonging to the Peerage or Baronetage of the United Kingdom Inherited County of Kincardine (created 1925) and 3rd Baronet , of Ury in the County of Kincardine (created 1897). These titles are used to this day as subordinate titles to the Earl.

The earl's eldest son bears the courtesy title of Lord Inverurie .
