East York [ ˌistˈjɔɹk ] is the smallest district of Toronto with an area of 21.26 square kilometers . The 2001 census found East York to be 115,185. It's east of downtown .
history
The area around what is now York was discovered by European settlers in 1791 and named Dublin Township . This name was renamed a few years later by John Graves Simcoe in honor of the Duke of York and Albany in York. East York was a separate parish in County York. The city on the eastern arm of the Don River developed into an industrial city in the 19th century. Important branches of this industry were u. a. a distillery and several mills. Between 1840 and 1880 York was best known for its prosperous agriculture.
East York was originally founded in 1967 as a district in the Toronto metropolitan area with semi-autonomous status. In 1998 it was merged to form the “ megacity ” of Toronto. Since the 1970s, East York has become the capital of immigrants.
Demographics
45.1% of East York's residents are immigrants, and around half of those (49%) immigrated between 1991 and 2001. The immigrants are u. a. from India, Pakistan, Jamaica, Philippines and Sri Lanka. There is also an old-established community of Greek immigrants and a growing community of immigrants from China. Although English is the predominant language in East York, 42.6% of the population say that neither English nor French is their first language.
