Torbensen previously operated the Torbensen Motor Car Company . As the Midwest developed more and more into a center of the automotive industry, the company headquarters were relocated to Cleveland in Ohio in 1915. In 1923 the name was changed to Eaton Axle & Spring and it was listed on the New York Stock Exchange .

Shortly before the global economic crisis , the company almost tripled its share capital and thus secured liquidity for investments. In the 1950s and 1960s, the existing business areas were expanded through a large number of company takeovers, also internationally: After more and more motor vehicle manufacturers had settled in Brazil , the company entered into a joint venture in 1957 and founded a branch in São Paulo , the Eaton SA Corp.
