Ebbw Vale [ ˈɛbuː veɪl ] ( Welsh Glyn Ebwy ) is a city in Wales . It is the most populous city in County Borough Blaenau Gwent .
geography
The city lies on the River Ebbw (Welsh Afon Ebwy ) south of the Brecon Beacons National Park .
history
Until the beginning of the industrial revolution , Ebbw Vale was a village with around 120 inhabitants. The first steel mill opened in 1778, and numerous mines followed in the late 18th century. In the 1930s, the steel mill was the largest in Europe. About 14,500 people worked there in the 1960s. At the end of the 20th century the workshops were gradually closed; 2002 the last factory. In the period that followed, the city had one of the highest unemployment rates in the UK. A hospital, university campus, school and leisure center were built on the fallow mining site.
Sport, leisure and culture
The Rugby Club Ebbw Vale RFC is the most famous club in the city and plays in the first Welsh League . It was founded in 1879.
The Glamorgan region has hosted numerous cricket matches in Ebbw Vale.
In 1958 Ebbw Vale hosted the Eisteddfod for the first time , and in 2010 for the second time.
The Beaufort Theater is the largest of its kind in the region.
