history

Alemannic row graves on the Kirnachufer on the northern edge of the village, which have so far only been partially explored, indicate that the area was first settled in the first half of the 7th century. Among the finds unearthed there is a silver-plated main strap tongue of a man's belt with the Latin inscription "DEVS IN ADIVTARIVM TVO INTE", which indicates a Christian creed of the settlers that already existed at that time. Other finds include a gold-plated disc brooch , bronze earrings and richly decorated lance tips. Ebenhofen is first mentioned as Hebenhofen in the bull of Pope Gregory IX. in 1239 under the ownership of the Irsee monastery . Later the village was mostly named Hewen- and Haebenhofen . In 1334 Ebenhofen was part of the Kemnat rule . The moated castle east of the parish church was the seat of the Lords of Rothenstein from 1415 to 1497 , who sold it for 1,500 Rhenish guilders to Konrad Fuchs, who was in the service of Emperor Maximilian . Other lords of the castle were the noble families von Döffingen, von Hallweil, von Westernach , von Stücklitsch, von Perfall and most recently Joseph Ferdinand Wetzer.

The place fell in the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803 to the electorate and later Kingdom of Bavaria . With the Bavarian municipality edict of 1818 the community Ebenhofen was founded. On April 1, 1971, Ebenhofen was incorporated into the Altdorf community. On December 23, 1976, it was renamed Biessenhofen .

Population development

In 1529 the place had 37 houses. By 1809 the number of houses rose to 66. Today Ebenhofen has around 1,400 inhabitants.
