Life

Eberhard II had been a member of the Bamberg cathedral chapter since 1127 . He was in 1146 by Pope Eugene III. consecrated bishop. Eberhard was considered a royal loyal follower, initially by Konrad III. , later also by his successor Friedrich I. Under Conrad III. he planned the Second Crusade in 1147 . As Konrad III. He died in 1152 and was buried in Bamberg Cathedral . This is a sign that the Diocese of Bamberg had made a name for itself on the imperial political level and that Eberhard II appeared as an important advisor at court and imperial meetings. For his decisive help with the election preparations and the coronation of Frederick I, he received the imperial abbey Niederaltaich . He stayed in the emperor's entourage and accompanied them to Rome and Lombardy, among other places , and was a negotiator for the peace treaty during the siege of Milan . He supported Frederick I also in the appointment of the imperial antipope Victor IV. (1159-1164), even as this to him, as well as the emperor himself, the excommunication earned.

In 1163 Friedrich I granted Bamberg duty-free. This helped Bamberg to gain an important economic position and ambitious Bamberg merchant families also gained in importance in the centuries to come and fought for privileges with the cathedral chapter, among other things.

Eberhard II took care of the further expansion of the diocese and secured its borders from the outside by purchasing or building new castles. This included, among other things, the acquisition of Nordeck Castle and Steinach Market in 1151 . He bought this former lordship from the Hennebergers . Until the beginning of the 16th century, episcopal bailiffs sat at Nordeck Castle. The castle came to an end in connection with Hans Thomas von Absberg and the Peasants' War .

In 1157, the bishop founded the Cistercian convent of St. Martin and Theodor in Bamberg. He reformed the Heidenheim monastery and the Admont Benedictine monastery .
