Eberhard Petzold (* 1944 in Worpswede ) is a German photographer. He became known for his illustrated books on international merchant shipping .

life and work

Eberhard Petzold first studied law and received his doctorate in Hamburg in 1973 . After the second state examination he devoted himself more and more to his passion, photography. From 1980 he ran his own photo studio in Hamburg as an advertising, industrial and architectural photographer. Because of the large number of photo orders from merchant shipping and the associated long trips around the world, he closed his studio at the beginning of the 2000s and has since devoted himself entirely to shipping photography.

The subject of his first two illustrated books was the St. Nikolai memorial in Hamburg and the city itself, before he turned to the port of Hamburg . This was followed by photo books on worldwide shipping , shipbuilding at the Hyundai shipyard in South Korea and the construction of container ships at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. Another topic was the SCOT 8000 special tankers for an illustrated book and the gas tankers welded together at the Neptun shipyard in Rostock-Travemünde.

Eberhard Petzold experienced life and work on board the container ships , bulk carriers and tankers up close during many voyages and captured them in pictures. This also applies to the mood on the seas and in the major shipping channels such as the Panama Canal and Suez Canal and the handling of goods in the ports. The characteristic flair of the port cities fascinates him, so that photo books have been created about these cities and their ports around the world. In his book on the flow of goods in the world , he deals with the role of shipping in global trade.

ZDF described Eberhard Petzold's visual style when reviewing the illustrated book Shipping Worldwide : “The photos are fascinating and unusual, they lead the viewer directly into the action. Interesting perspectives provide information about the background to cargo shipping with all its facets. The book conveys the atmosphere of adventure. ”( ZDF : http://www.foto-dock.com/presse.php ).

Eberhard Petzold is the founder of the Foto-Dock picture agency.
