Ed Whitlock (born March 6, 1931 in London , England , † March 13, 2017 in Toronto , Ontario ) was a Canadian medium and long-distance runner . The 86-year-old at his death was the first over seventy to run a marathon under three hours.

Life

Ed Whitlock was born in London and later immigrated to Canada to pursue his professional engineering career. There he found a new home in Milton (Ontario) . During his school days and as a student at the University of London , he was already performance-oriented running and won several track and cross-country runs .

After moving to Canada, Ed Whitlock, motivated by his then 14-year-old son, who ran a marathon daily for a year, did not start running again until he was 41, initially in the middle distance range . At the age of 48 he became the 1500 m world champion in the M45 and the first marathon followed in Ottawa with a time of 2:31:23 h . Ed Whitlock finally became known for his age group world records. In 2000, at the age of 69, he was the oldest person to run a marathon under three hours (2:52:47 h) . Subsequently, he set records in almost all medium and long distances as well as in marathons in the age groups M70, M75, M80 and M85. He was also able to set several records over the half marathon distance, albeit only unofficially due to a lack of record lists. He regularly started at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon and sometimes held the finish banner when the winners came in.

Ed Whitlock ran in old age despite several illnesses. In 2008 he was diagnosed with arthritis in the knee and the doctor in charge told him he could never walk again. Ed Whitlock ran his last world record over the marathon distance in the M85 age group (3:56:33 h) in a 30-year-old T-shirt and 15-year-old running shoes. He managed to improve the previous best in the age group (4:34:55 h) by over half an hour, and the old world record (5:00:25 h) by over an hour. One week after his 86th birthday, Ed Whitlock died of prostate cancer in 2017 .

According to the conversion formula of the "World Masters Athletics", in which the marathon performance is set in relation to a theoretical main class time, taking age into account, Ed Whitlock achieved higher times than world record holder Dennis Kimetto . His M80 world record of 3:15:54 h would be converted to a main class time of 2:02:10 h , a time 47 seconds faster than that of the world record of 2:02:57 h . In the imaginary duel with Haile Gebrselassie (then world record 2:03:59 h ), Ed Whitlock was two seconds ahead with his M70 world record of 2:54:48 h , which means 2:03:57 h .
