Edward "Eddie" Blay (born November 9, 1937 in Accra ; † October 15, 2006 ibid) was a Ghanaian welterweight boxer .

Amateur career

At the first African championships held in Cairo in 1962 , he won the lightweight class. He was able to repeat the success in 1964 in Accra as a light welterweight. 1966 in Lagos he lost in the final of the welterweight category Joseph Bessala from Cameroon . Blay also won the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth in 1962 and in Kingston in 1966 .

In 1964 he won the bronze medal in the light welterweight division at the Olympic Games in Tokyo , he lost in the semifinals against Jerzy Kulej from Poland on points.

Professional career

In 1967 he became a professional. His career only got going after the third fight, which he lost on points against the Italian Aldo Mondora . He put on a series of nineteen wins, but then lost in Italy in September 1970 on points against Silvano Bertini . In February 1973 his first title fight for the vacant Commonwealth welterweight title took place. Blay lost to Canadian Clyde Gray on points.

His two attempts to become African champions also failed. In March 1974 he lost to Salam Ouédraogo of Ivory Coast by technical knockout in round thirteen. In November of the same year Blay suffered a point defeat against the Cameroonian Joseph Bessala . After two more fights, he hung up his boxing gloves in May 1975.
