Edgar Dören (born October 6, 1941 in Wuppertal ; † April 1, 2004 there ) was a German racing car driver .

Career

Edgar Dören has been driving car races since the 1970s, mostly with sports cars from Stuttgart - Zuffenhausen , which is why he was also called Mr. Porsche . He was for many years in the former German Racing Championship (DRM), six times during the 24-hour race at Le Mans and many other GT races at the start, but his second home was the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring .

For 22 years he has been driving VLN endurance races, where he achieved two dozen overall victories. In addition, he won the 24h race there with Gerhard Holup in 1988 , with a privately driven 15-year-old Porsche 911 Carrera RSR against modern works cars.

In the Eifel, the Wuppertal was popular with competitors and spectators due to its fair driving style, its always friendly manner and in particular the almost constant waving of the hand from the side window. In addition, it enabled numerous young drivers to gain initial experience on their Porsche as part of the CHC performance tests.

In the endurance race at the end of October 2003, Edgar Dören was still at the start on two Porsches.

In March 2004 his cancer became known, to which he succumbed shortly before the start of the season. His teammate Karl-Christian Lück then said goodbye with a lap of honor before the start, and the well over 100 racing cars wore a mourning ribbon.
